I’m interested in adopting a 4 mo old little boy with Down Syndrome from Armenia?

Mimi asked the question:

Can anyone who has completed an international special needs adoption fill me in as to the ins and outs of doing something like this? I have 5 biological children, 4 with special needs (1 having Down Syndrome) and want more. I have found the agency I wish to work with, but I’m not sure what I do first besides my home study. A lot of people are trying to get me to adopt a child who is cognitively impaired instead…. Which I have no problems with, but I really want another child with Down Syndrome. Another part to this, I am terrified to fly a total of 16 hours.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help.

You can adopt a Downs Syndrome child right here in the US.

There are many in foster care and you won’t have to fly very far.

GO DOMESTIC!! Then you can drive wherever you want to go.

The U.S. has all the special needs children you could ever hope to adopt.

Websites like Adoption.com have all the ins and outs of the different countries and their adoption laws

This is what Adoptiong.com had to say about Armenia

The Armenia program gives strong preference to individuals of Armenian descent, and adopting parents will be asked for a promise to maintain the child’s cultural heritage, and to provide a letter of reference from their church leader. Children available for adoption include boys and girls, from infant to 12 years of age, and approximately half are special needs. These children reside in hospitals and orphanages. In 2003, approximately 43 children were adopted from Armenia by U.S. citizens.

43 is a really low number compared to other coutires with international programs, but since you are looking to adopt a special needs child the requirements might be easier.

Also you will have to stay in country 2 weeks so make sure that is somthing you are able to do. It might be really difficult with 5 children already.
